Virginia Gaylord Prepares to Shape a Changing World

2014 Jan 28

Virginia Gaylord, a Miss Porter's School student, recently participated in InterMission, a mission-focused winter term inserted between the first and second semesters

The school's mission states, "Miss Porter's School educates young women to become informed, bold, resourceful and ethical global citizens. We expect our graduates to shape a changing world." InterMission strives to provide students with the opportunity to explore their passions and interests while learning essential skills such as collaboration, creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, and communication within appropriate grade-level curricula. InterMission celebrates and cultivates students' increasing independence as thinkers and self-awareness as learners.

Cross-disciplinary topics were explored experientially, while rigorous academic experiences required research, analysis, reflection, presentation, and most importantly, self-discovery. Courses were electives and culminated in an independent project thereby empowering students to become architects of their own experience. Students completed InterMission with a strong foundation of abilities upon which they will rely in college and long after as they set out to shape a changing world.

Samples of InterMission 2014 courses include:

The Power of Art in Medicine Understanding Hunger and Food Security Wilderness IQ Introduction to SCUBA Outdoor Photography The Business of Nonprofits Intellectual Property Rights: Protecting and Benefiting from Your Creativity Through the Looking Glass: Race, Gender, and Class in Children's Literature
